Underground Overground

Description

Despite London Underground being called the Underground, or colloquially known as "The Tube" (also known by the recent TV series on BBC2 also called "The Tube", not to be confused with the 1972 music show on Channel 4), certain parts of the deep level network also reach the surface and proceed for long distances above ground as well as below ground. One such section is on the Bakerloo Line between Queens Park and Harrow and Wealdstone, where Underground trains break cover and run alongside the West Coast Main Line on the suburban lines out of London Euston.

Here, 1972 Stock Driving Motor car (DM) number 3247 leads a 7 car unit southbound approaching South Kenton with a service to Elephant and Castle. The recent upgrade of the Victoria Line saw the former ATO (Automatic Train Operation) equipped 1967 Stock withdrawn and replaced by brand new 2009 Stock, which in turn saw the 1972 Stock's lifespan increased by way of component recovery and reuse from the closely related 1967 Stock trains, and currently there are no plans to withdraw any of the 1972 Stock, meaning their future, for now at least, seems relatively secure.
