Hello everyone, and welcome to my first full blown feature on DeviantArt. Making the most of my 3 month premium membership, which I may extend if I wish, I intend to make regular features of peoples work. Part 1 of the series is entitled "Loco Hauled" and covers everything from steam to diesel to electric, from passenger to freight, from publicly operated to preserved. So without further ado, let's get straight into it! :)

60163 'Tornado' II by berkut-hh by :iconberkut-hh:

The first steam locomotive to be built in England in 50 years, is 60163 Tornado, part of the LNER A1 Class express passenger locomotive. None of the original A1 Peppercorn Class were saved for preservation, and the plans for the original locomotives were stored at the National Railway Museum in York. Tornado was built as a showcase to show that it can be done, and how steam would have looked had it survived beyond 11th August 1968 into the 21st century.

Inter-City Express by classictrains by :iconclassictrains:

Even though classictrains is an American resident, he has a few images of a bygone era of British Railways. This image was taken in 1989, and shows an Intercity liveried Class 43 HST rolling into the station. The days that the HST carried the Intercity livery are by now a distant memory, but shots like this keep it alive.

Highball at Holliday by factorone33 by :iconfactorone33:

I will admit, I don't pay as much attention as I should to American rolling stock, people always say you should do more, and shots like this make me think that maybe I should. The colour and depth of field are quite impressive, and seeing containers stacked two high is something entirely new to me brit. :D

Beast of Dartmoor by GB-Railways by :icongb-railways:

Back over the sea, and into some hellfire diesel action here from 2007. GB-Railways was one I found through a search on DA, and he holds an impressive collection of British rolling stock from steam to diesel, and I'm sure some electric. Here is seen a BR Blue Class 37 locomotive, producing an impressive amount of diesel clag from it's exhaust system.

Mirrlees Pioneer by irwingcommand by :iconirwingcommand:

Staying with the Class 37, and here we see 37901 Mirlees Pioneer parked next to one of her preceding locomotive classes, the Class 20, on the East Lancashire Railway at Ramsbottom Station. This image, if I'd say a little overexposed, shows the differences of having a cab front and a bonnet front to a loco.

Arrival at Paddington by klambert94 by :iconklambert94:

The Class 43 again, this time in it's modern day form and modern day regular location of Paddington station in London. All of the sets that operate out of Paddington are operated by First Great Western, and have all been refurbished with a new quieter and greener MTU engine, to help see the class into the 21st century.

Schools Class by lampwortroy by :iconlampwortroy:

Truly timeless is what one could call this piece, taken from a 1/4 plate glass negative purchased from Ebay is a Southern Railway Schools Class steam locomotive, in full steam somewhere on the southern region. Even though Schools Class locos have survived into preservation, none are currently mainline, rendering this sight to history for now.

Continuing with the steam theme, and here we see a locomotive which recently made history as the first of it's kind to steam in preservation. S.R Battle Of Britain Class Rebuilt 4.6.2 number 34059 "Sir Archibald Sinclair" was restored from ex-Barry condition to this status very recently, I myself have also hitched a ride behind this loco. Utterly glorious.

44871 V by matt-durkan-railways by :iconmatt-durkan-railways:

I've known Matt for a while now, and recently like myself, he invested in his photography and purchased a Nikon DSLR (mainly cos he had to, his camera died on the trip to the states where he bought it), and images like this soon followed. Shown here is something that Matt and his team of engineers have been working on for the past 2 years. A legend, reborn. :)

The Freightliner Twins by robertbeardwell by :iconrobertbeardwell:

It's thanks to Robert I'm getting the chance to do all this, so it's only fitting he makes it into my journal. And what a way to do so, seen here are two of the WCMLs pride and glory, the Class 86 locomotive, designed in 1965 and still going in 2010, albeit in reduced  numbers, 46 years later, and they still perform almost faultlessly. Great British engineering. :)

Former Queen by shenanigan87 by :iconshenanigan87:

Sticking with oldschool electrics, and this is the equivalent locomotive from Germany, the Class 110, designed 50 years ago, and is now disappearing fast due to the DBs negligance with locomotive disposal. A handful have been preserved, but I fear not this one, which is such a shame indeed. A lovely photo of a truly stunning locomotive.

Thundering by by ZiggyShadowDust by :iconziggyshadowdust:

A contribution from Ireland now, and here set against the setting sun, we have the pass of a steam locomotive at full pelt. Irish railways may not be as big or as impressive as the UK or US or continental network, but just because of this, it's interesting, and Ziggy has to my mind the largest collection of Irish railway photographs, so it's well worth a look.

Final Diesel in Cologne by ZCochrane by :iconzcochrane:

The last run of a train of any kind is always a special moment to the railfan. Special as it's the end of an era, an era which may never return for the Class 218 diesel loco, Germany's best loved diesel locomotive. Here 218-425-7 is seen as she makes the final run on the RE12 route to Trier, with Silberlinge carriages in tow. DMUs were to operate the following day onwards.

Happy birthday shenanigan87 by holzernes-herz by :iconholzernes-herz:

And finally for this feature, another look into the past from Bob, this time showing another little classic, a peak class diesel locomotive on a freight run, shortly after the introduction of the class onto the Midland region. I stand by my decision that it's a Class 45, but there is some ambiguity about whether it's a 44 or 45. Each to their own and all that...

So that's all folks. I hope some of you have found some new stuff you liked, or I have re-kindled good memories for you all. Coming up I have more stuff from the Cumbrian Mountain Express tour, and on the 9th September I shall be attending the Type 4/5 day on the ELR, which has the awesome Class 55 Deltic in attendance. For those who don't know what a Deltic is, here's one I captured earlier... ;)
